Shaping the Future of Our Children
An amazing opportunity stands before us to help shape the lives of our children as they grow into the adults of the future. The Bible teaches us to be Thankful in all circumstances (1 Thes 5:18). The Bible also teaches us to bring up a child in the way they should go and when they are older they will not depart from that way (Prov 22:6).
Gratitude is vitally important to one’s happiness. However, it is very easy to get caught up in our daily lives, and the woes that go with it, and forget to be grateful for what we have. If it is hard for adults to remember to be grateful for what they have, then it should come as no surprise that kids often end up acting infuriatingly entitled.
So how do we go about teaching kids gratitude?
First and foremost, they need to see their parents and the adults around them modelling an attitude of gratitude. We all need to work on that!
Secondly, we can talk to them about it, but experience has shown that kids always learn better by DOING. They need to DO something and get messy, or active, or artistic, or silly, in order to have something really sink in. Also many things need to be done a number of times to become a good habit or attitude.
The mission statement of the School Gratitude Program is to teach children and young people Gratitude and Appreciation through Interaction, Role Play and Outreach.
