Opposition Leader’s Message for 2018
At the beginning of each year we request a Statement of Support from the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader. Following is the leader of the Opposition, Mr Bill Shorten’s message of support for our National Day.
2018 NATIONAL DAY OF THANKSGIVING
NATIONAL DAY OF THANKS
On behalf of the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party, I am delighted to extend my support and well wishes for everyone taking part in the National Day of Thanksgiving on Saturday 26th May.
Since 2004 when it was launched, the National Day of Thanksgiving has provided an important opportunity for local communities to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and dedicated service of countless fellow citizens.
It is a time to recognise the many professions, vocations and volunteer roles that contribute to making our society more cohesive, sustainable and enjoyable for all. It is a time to pay tribute to the individuals and organisations that go above and beyond the call of duty and foster a genuine sense of community and inclusion.
As a nation, we value the efforts of those who give selflessly of their time, energy, talent or resources to improve the lives of those around them and to alleviate some of the hardship that others endure. The National Day of Thanksgiving is, in that sense, an extension of the collective appreciation we feel as citizens and friends.
This year the focus is on thanking people who contribute to promoting and fostering our dynamic cultural heritage either through their work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, or with our migrant communities and new arrivals. We offer our thanks for their commitment and initiative.
In addition, we pay tribute to our educators, school administrators and support staff who work day in and day out with our most valuable asset – our young people. As the son of a teacher, I am very proud to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of those who work in our early childhood centres, schools and universities. Teaching is a truly heroic vocation.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the many church groups, organisations, businesses and volunteers who get behind the thanksgiving events and who help make the day a wonderful community celebration.
Once again, I wish everyone a Happy National Day of Thanksgiving, and I encourage all Australians to take the opportunity to celebrate this great occasion and engage with their local communities.
